In Massena, New York, foundries opened 60 years ago have been converted into the world’s largest cryptocurrency mine by exploiting the low-cost electricity produced by a dam in the San Lorenzo river. Patrick McGeehan of the New York Times writes that many entrepreneurs are opening up business in this economically depressed area.
At the beginning of the year, the New York Electricity Authority decided to subsidize a company by supplying 15 million megawatts of energy. In return, the company has guaranteed new jobs and local investments.
